Dr. Ellen Smulders studied Movement Science and Physical Therapy. After working as a physical therapist in the Academic Hospital in Maastricht, she started her PhD project at the Sint Maartenskliniek in Nijmegen. In this project she focused on falls prevention in older adults with osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis (grant: ZonMW). Currently, she works as a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Rehabilitation of the RadboudUMC in Nijmegen. In this function Dr. Smulders did research om falls prevention in persons with intellectual disabilities. Currently, she studies falls prevention and functional gait in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (grants: Revalidatiefonds and Johanna kinderfonds). Besides her work as a researcher, her main job is teacher at the Master Geriatric Physical Therapy at Avans+ in Breda. Furthermore, she is course leader, coordinator and teacher at the Dutch Institute for Allied Health Professionals. In 2017 she contributed to the Dutch CBO-guideline regarding the prevention of fall incidents in the elderly.
