Dr Karin Valkenet works as senior researcher and project manager at the University Medical Center Utrecht (the Netherlands). She started her career as physiotherapist at the UMC Utrecht within the specialisms cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. She combined her work as PT with research in the field of pre- and rehabilitation. She specialised in preoperative training in patients undergoing oesophageal cancer surgery. She designed and coordinated the PREPARE trial, an international multi-centre trial on preoperative inspiratory muscle training in Oesophagectomy patients. She presented this work at the WCPT congress in Cape Town 2017 for which she won the PEDRO award for best Randomised Controlled Trial. She also presented at the Annual meeting of the European Surgery Association in Bucharest, at the convention of the International Society for Diseases of the oesophagus in Singapore and at several Dutch and Belgian meetings. Currently she works as senior researcher and project manager with the task to increase mobility levels of hospitalised patients. She is involved several project concerning pre- and rehabilitation after Oesophagectomy, she is currently developing a mobile application to change preoperative lifestyle and supervises PhD students investigating the functional recovery and physical activity of patients before, during and after hospital stay.
